How-to: editing menu item descriptions on the update menu page

What?

Whenever you add a beer, wine, or spirit to your BeerMenus page, you’re able to review and edit the menu item’s description before adding it to your menu.

This allows you to make sure you’re describing the menu item the way you want to describe it on your BeerMenus page, website, and printed drink menu.

How?

When adding an item to your BeerMenus page, the first step is to type the name of the menu item into the "Name" field. If you’re adding a beer, wine, or spirit, chances are very good that we already have an entry for that product in our database.

If we do, you can select the item from the dropdown so that you automatically pull all the information about that menu item (e.g. ABV, where it’s produced, and the item’s description) over to your BeerMenus page, website menu, and printed drink menu:

As soon as you select the item from the dropdown, two things happen:

  • The item name will appear in the “Name” field.
  • Beneath the “Name” field an editable text box with the item’s database description will appear.

If the description looks good to you, then don’t do anything—just continue the normal flow of adding container, size, price, and so on.

If the description isn’t what you want at your business, you can edit the existing description:

And don’t worry—if you start editing but wind up wishing you hadn’t, you don’t have to go searching around for the official description. Just click the “Revert to brewery’s/distillery’s/winery’s description” link and the description will instantly revert back to the original description:

As soon as you click that link, you'll go back to the brewery/winery/distillery's description of the item:

After you finish editing the description, continue adding container, size, price, etc., and then click "Add to menu." That item—with edited description—will appear on your BeerMenus page, your printed drink menu, and your website beer list!

Note for the community minded: Editing descriptions this way does not apply the edits site-wide—rather, they’re limited to your page. We set it up this way so that businesses could both have their cake (a big, reliable universal database with general item descriptions) and eat it too (edit descriptions at a business-level).

If you've turned off descriptions on your print menu, website menu, BeerMenus page, etc., those descriptions will still not appear—this update does not affect those settings.

Why?

From your BeerMenus page to your printed drink menu, we want to make sure you’re describing your menu items the way you want to describe them. Our database is very solid—we have over 230,000 beers in our database—but sometimes the producer’s description doesn’t exactly fit your business. Now you have the power to tailor descriptions exactly the way you’d like.

This should be an especially significant improvement for businesses who use our printed drink menus, since you can verify (and edit) menu items' descriptions right as you're adding them.
